4 Tenets of Weathering Change and Strengthening Leadership

A little over a week ago, I had the opportunity to attend a webinar on “Prevention Strategies to Buffer the Traumatic Impact of Covid-19 on Children and Adults.” The session was led by Lou Bergholz, Managing Partner and Founder of Edgework Consulting. I worked with Edgework in a past corporate life and always find their perspective refreshing but practical and Lou’s facilitation engaging and thought provoking. This return to their work did not disappoint.

While the session itself was ultimately focused on “turning anxiety into growth” relative to buffering trauma, I found its themes to be pervasive and applicable from personal and professional points of view. Lately, I have been struck by how the content I take in weaves together and echoes into other facets of life – particularly as it relates to leadership. Whether I’m reading an article in Mindful Magazine, learning about cultivating happiness, or digging into more traditional coaching approaches, there are threads that connect everything and make the content richer than if it stood alone.

Edgework asks us to think about Connection, Control, Competence, and Contribution when it comes to “turning anxiety into growth.” However, I would challenge all of us, as leaders, how to facilitate these concepts for our organizations and for our teams during times of challenge, during times of change, but also in times of normalcy.

· Connection: How do you create an environment that feels safe and fosters relationship building?

· Control: How do you give your people autonomy in their work?

· Competence: How do you foster development to promote mastery and reinforce capability?

· Contribution: How do you help others connect to purpose in work to drive meaning?

These four words encapsulate my 15 years of HR experience and, to some extent, 35+ years of human experience (we don’t need to be exact!).

What will you do to strengthen one of these tenets in your organization today?

To explore their work more, please reach out to Edgework Consulting at info@edgeworkconsulting.com and thank you to Lou and his team for continuing to support the community during this unprecedented and difficult time in our history.
