Core Values Exercise

I can’t put my finger on exactly what prompted it, but early in developing my approach to coaching, I decided I wanted to emphasize core values. Not just emphasize but start with values. Every one of my coaching engagements starts with a values exercise. I’ll explain why and give you the tools to do this short but massively impactful work yourself.

Why take the time to codify your values?

1 – Personal Benefits

Whether known or subconscious, our values drive our actions and our satisfaction day in and day out. The way we operate, how we make decisions, and what we prioritize is greatly influenced by what we value. Our level of passion, engagement, and satisfaction is also greatly intertwined with our values. When you’re able to distill and declare those values, it’s easier to understand what drives and motivates you and, conversely, why you may be feeling tension or dissatisfaction in certain areas of life. When values are not honored, we start to feel that tug that something’s not right. Being able to identify that gap is a powerful step towards mitigation or resolution.

This list of 3-5 words can help you define your career path, select a new job, prioritize more effectively, communicate better, or simply drive more satisfaction.

2 - Leadership Benefits

Not only will defined values help you personally, but they will help you be more effective as a leader. Leaders who are more aware of their values are able to be more authentic in their approach and purposeful in their style. This credibility leads to enhanced trust and productivity. Values-driven leaders are also able to recognize when they might be overemphasizing their values or preferences and shift towards understanding those of others on the team. This will again foster closer relationships that drive engagement and, ultimately, productivity.

I’ve seen first-hand how solidifying your core values can be transformational. And it only takes a few minutes!

I usually use the first 3 steps in the TapRoot exercise (I don’t add verbs, like in step 4) and go to the MindTools list for any additional word inspiration.
